Dynamo marks a triumphant return to the field, filled with warm electro-acoustic timbres and patchwork beat.
- Boomkat (UK)
While the new album is very much in the vein of his past work, it's now cohesive like never before. The disparate influences he taps into mold together beautifully; experimental and pop sensibilities merge into a wonderful sound that demonstrate the careful precision of Christiansen's craft. Where a lot of electronic releases have flopped this year, Rumpistol is set to steal the limelight.
- The Silent Ballet (UK)
The songs themselves, wrapped up and put together, are distinctly Rumpistol's own. And as far as contemporary electronic music goes, they're top of the line.
- Matt Shimmer (Indieville)
With 'Dynamo', Rumpistol has made a flowing and totally inviting album that will captivate all but the most heartless of listeners. Its glistening melodics, brooding atmospherics, oozing basslines and complex micro-orchestral arrangements gel with such harmonic intent that the power of the end result is nothing short of enchanting. Highly recommended to all who require a shining beacon to get them through the dark depression of Winter.
- KS/Experimusic (UK)
A collection of elegantly constructed pieces that constantly slip between the fingers, refusing to stay still, writhing and wriggling around each other. Beautiful harmonic structures topple over spiralling rhythms, leaving you spell-bound.
- Robin Rimbaud aka Scanner (UK)
In drei Worten: Welch schöne Musik!
- Blumberg/DE:BUG (DE)
- Simon Lund/Politiken (D)
Rumpistol’s previous work has been easily definable: based in funk, but edgy enough to be IDM. Dynamo is a risky and impressive evolution for the Dane, delving into darker, loop-based grooves and teetering close to *gasp* dubstep, while maintaining his trademark warm, curious melodies.
Well regarded in electronica circles, RUMPISTOL has an ambient acceptability that listeners like me (with no particular brief for electronica as a genre) can get much pleasure and interest from.
After nearly 3 years since the release of his last album, the Danish electronica artist Rumpistol is now ready to release his third album entitled 'Dynamo'. However, the period in between the last album has not been one of idleness as Rumpistol has been busy running his own label Rump Recordings (founded in 2003), playing numerous concerts, producing a soundtrack and making remixes. In June 2008, the remix of the track 'Dreng' for Snöleoparden went straight in at number one, chosen by the listeners of the popular radio show 'Det Elektriske Barometer' at the Danish Broadcasting Corporation.
Since his debut in 2003, Rumpistol has been exploring the borderland between abstract electronica and a more immediate melodic approach. An often eclectic mix that has captured listeners outside the electronic scene too.
This characteristic combination of intricate compositions and catchy melodies is continued on Rumpistols new album 'Dynamo'. Here drum-machines and synths merge effortlessly with more traditional instruments like pianos and strings.
The album is balanced between an introverted expression and a more outward-looking experience, while an ongoing alternation between melancholy and optimism adds a tinge of nostalgia.
This is enhanced by the orchestration and production, which contain references to both new and old electronic music (i.e. glitch, techno, dub (-step) and ambient), yet at the same time pointing towards rock, jazz and classical music.
In it's structure 'Dynamo' is like a fine-meshed net holding the tracks together. Fine details gently slide through the net and become elements leading the way through the music. The result is an imaginative, emotional and warm musical experience, always with a theme or harmonic change so unquestionably 'Rumpistolish'.
The artwork for 'Dynamo' has been made in collaboration with the graphic collective Bottega Areté, who has contributed to the visual identity of Rumpistol since his debut.
